My Journey into Tech: From Curiosity to Building Scalable Products.

I am a graduate of Computer Science from Madonna University in Nigeria. My academic journey, however, lacked practical experiments or demonstrations on fully utilizing a computer. But curiosity drove me—I wanted to know more. That curiosity led me to self-learning, which eventually landed me a role at an engineering company, where I worked in their IT department during my SIWES internship.

During my internship, I learned networking, computer maintenance, software installation, OS installation, server management, Active Directory, and more. I loved technology and was the go-to person for anything related to maintenance or repair, both at work and at home. My performance during the internship was outstanding, and upon graduation, I was offered a full-time role at the company. I later went on to lead their other branch in Lagos, Nigeria, but after some years, I decided to move on.

Then came the pandemic. While many turned to TikTok and content creation, I stayed glued to my computer, teaching myself how to code. I participated in a three-month competitive internship with over 10,000 participants. The deadlines were unrealistic, causing many to quit or be cut off, but I was persistent. I made sure to deliver on time and deliver well. By the final stage, only 200 of us remained—I was one of them. Scaling to the final stage (Stage 10) and becoming a finalist was one of my biggest achievements in 2020. (Although, let’s be honest, TikTok might have made me richer!).

Even though I became a finalist overcoming the odds, I still battled with imposter syndrome. I wrote an article about that here: Battling with Imposter Syndrome. I was scared of the unknown and hesitant to leave the job security of my IT support role to pursue coding full-time. I slacked off a bit and almost gave up. But then, a personal tragedy made me realize how short life is. I quit my job and moved cities—it was a complete 360-degree turn in my life. At that point, I had no other job waiting for me, and I was still scared of the unknown. But because of what had happened, I became fearless and didn’t care about the risks. It was time to make that bold decision and completely focus on coding and freelancing full-time. It felt risky at the time, but looking back, it was the best decision of my life. Since then, I have led engineering teams and deployed products that are now generating millions.

Professional Experience

Fullgap – A Project Management Tool

Duration: Jan 2022 - July 2023

Fullgap was founded by Victor and Bolaji, the founders of Fourth Canvas. Having previously worked with them at Fourth Canvas on a contract basis, I was excited when they reached out to me for help with Fullgap’s development. Under the engineering leadership of Ayomide and frontend lead Hafsah, I gained valuable experience. The role was fully remote, allowing us to take ownership of our processes—something I deeply appreciated. The tech stack included React.js, Material UI, and Redux Toolkit, Cypress for e2e testing, Sentry for observability and Mixpanel for analytics. During my time at Fullgap, I contributed to key features such as:

  • Autosave functionality

  • Invoicing system

  • Multicurrency support

Parivest – A Fintech Platform

Duration: Jan 2023 - Oct 2024

Parivest initially outsourced its MVP development to a third-party firm but later needed an in-house development team to continue scaling the app. They reached out to me, and I spearheaded the recruitment of designers, mobile developers, and backend engineers while handling frontend development. I led the redesign of the app from MVP to market fit, and since then, we have grown to over 30,000 users. The tech stack used included React.js, Next.js, Material UI, and Redux Toolkit. In addition to development, I took on significant product management responsibilities, conducting research, documentation, and drafting product requirements.

Some of the key features I led the development include:

  • Redevelopment of the app

  • Redevelopment of the web admin dashboard

  • Reports feature

  • Savings feature

  • Referral and ambassador referral system

  • Optimized app and server uptime

Mozilla – Outreachy Internship

Duration: Dec 2024 - present

In December 2024, I joined Mozilla as an Outreachy intern. I worked with the performance team on a new search feature for PerfCompare, a performance tool that helps users spot regressions. My contributions included implementing search vectors and GIN indexes for optimized full-text search, resolving performance bottlenecks, and improving query efficiency. My work was recognized on the Mozilla Discourse forum, where I was mentioned for my contributions. Throughout this process, my mentors provided invaluable guidance, helping me refine my problem-solving approach, write cleaner code, and better understand database indexing strategies.

  • Enhancing accessibility

  • Fixing bugs and improving features

  • Enhancing user experience

  • Learning Python and Django to develop the new search feature

Side Projects

Beyond my professional work, I love building projects that solve real-world problems. Some of my notable side projects include:

AI-Powered Recipe Finder

This tool allows users to search for a dish, and AI generates the recipe and ingredients. If the food is already in my database, it retrieves it; otherwise, it generates a new recipe and saves it for future queries. I plan to add a feature allowing users to edit AI-generated recipes to improve accuracy. This would also require implementing authentication and possibly introducing a user leaderboard based on the number of accurate edits or contributions made.

Expense Tracker with AI Reports

This expense tracker helps users record their income and expenses, generating AI-powered reports on spending habits.

  • Authentication: Google OAuth

Real Estate Web Application

This application allows realtors to add and manage properties. I also built an admin dashboard that enables administrators to manage realtors and their listings. This was my first backend project, and I learned a lot about backend development while building it.

Technical Writing

I have also written several technical articles, some of which have been featured on Hashnode. I was also a guest author for ButterCMS, where I wrote an article demonstrating How to Build a Dynamic React E-commerce Application.

What I’m Looking For

I am currently seeking frontend development roles, though I don’t mind working on some backend tasks and technical writing. Having worked remotely for over two years, I am open to remote roles, but I am also willing to relocate if the opportunity is right.

I am looking for a position where I can own my process without excessive micromanagement—one that trusts me to deliver. I want to work in a culture that values:

  • Collaboration

  • Innovation

  • Continuous learning

  • Work-life balance
